Driving to Texas
For the 190SL Group Convention

The official Start of the 2014 Texas Convention is Monday, October 13.  Since we're driving a 53 year-old 190SL over 1300 miles one way, we decide to give ourselves a few extra days, taking US Route 98 through the Florida Panhandle and Route 290 across Texas to Fredericksburg.

Except for a blustering thunderstorm East of Austin we arrive without incident to check in on time for appetizers and cocktails on the patio.  The following morning is judging for Concours, People's Choice, Ladies Choice and a new category, the car that "Needs More Love."

Every evening the Hospitality Room becomes an important place to wind down.

Wednesday and Thursday are spent touring the Texas Whitehouse of President Johnson, Wildseed Farms, Enchanted Rock State Park, the Nimitz Museum and National Museum of the Pacific War.  Thursday Evening holds dinner and awards with antics from The Dons.

With the traditional Annual Meeting held Thursday evening, we have plenty of time to pack for After The Ball and drive to lunch at Sisters Creek Ranch where we have an inspired luncheon prepared by their new chef who, as it turns out is a car buff, so we give him one of our XXL 190SL shirts.

Touring on Saturday takes us to Garner State Park and the drive of Leakey Loop to Vanderpool for lunch.  Heading back to Bandera, the Cowboy Capitol, we stop at the Apple store in Median.  On the Pioneer House porch the crowd grows awaiting the ranch cookout.  After dinner The Dons find something to fix on the Michigan car.

While others go on to San Antonio, we opt to start the long drive home, leaving Sunday morning after the group picture.  Texas highways are interesting, sporting 75 MPH on some two-lane roads and 80 on a six-lane toll road.  We stop briefly in Cut and Shoot, East of Austin.  Once back on US 98 we lunch in Apalachicola and spend the night in Homosassa Springs, arriving home Wednesday afternoon.
