Caribbean GSE

Rotary District 6960 visits District 7020

On April 12, 2008 our team of business people from Southwest Florida fly to Rotary District 7020 in the Caribbean for a month of vocational training and cultural experience.
Just after five o'clock Saturday morning, the team is unusually cheerful at the airport in Fort Myers.
From left are members Mike Liggins, Melina Frederick, Daniela Eckert and Bob Clendenin.  Next is District Governor Gary Israel and District GSE Coordinator Don Thomas.  On the right is member Mike Rauschenberger.  Team details are in the April 1 Rotary Bulletin at GSE Team.

By mid afternoon we are on the ground at Princess Juliana airport in Sint Maarten, the Dutch part of the island.  After checking into the Maho, we find lunch at Cheri's.  Joined by local Rotarian's, we visit the tiki hut by the beach followed by a gourmet dinner and a chance to explore the lights of the city.

The first priority Sunday is putting finishing touches on our presentation.
After I give a Taste of Punta Gorda t-shirt to the granddaughter of Amanda and Louie, host families drive us to the French side, to Boo-Boo-Jam "Pronounced (Boo-Boo-Jam)" on the beach.

Louie picks me up on Monday to visit his office and tour a couple of his projects, including the Festival Center and a super market.

What a great place to sip a beverage while waiting for friends to land!

Rising early Tuesday we visit Saint Martin Sunrise for our first GSE presentation.  It is also the first Rotary Club I've seen meeting in an airplane.  President Meredith inducted two new members this morning before we exchanged banners from our sponsoring clubs.

On April 16, we meet Sint Maarten officials, including the pleasure of council with Governor Franklin Richards.

Thursday we see more island sights, then visit Sint Maarten Academy and my first Interact Club meeting.

Friday is for fun aboard the Golden Eagle II; we're treated to a trip around the island with snorkeling, swimming and great food.

Another day for sun on the beach and  a delicious buffet dinner with Amanda and Louie on April 19.  After dinner we sing karaoke and I think my rendition of Mac The Knife was well received, in spite of the fact I can't sing.
